The Charon Initiative
The corporations were, in the end, saviors to their people. Everyone had to decide who they would follow to be saved from annihilation. Those who had money – a wealthy plutocracy – were afforded the absolute best shells in which to upload their minds. They are rare, they are exceptionally long-lived, and they have many “upgrades” (like face changing).
Some of these demigods remain in contact with the corporate servers – AI created with the task of managing each archive. These AI are viewed as “Gods” “Demons” etc. (but aren’t actually gods). The server’s coldly rational activities and now inscrutable processes make them seem like omnipotent beings to most. They can kill links, provide brief glimpses of insight and are also the source of most of the Uplink appending someone might want to do.
